City Island
Location:
In Long Island Sound just east of the Bronx mainland
Getting there:
Take the #6 Subway to Pelham Bay Park, then take the BX29 (City Island) Bus
The Experience:
Though a part of the Bronx, City Island is more reminiscent of a New England maritime community. Historically, the economy has been tied to the sea. In the 1830’s a robust oyster industry developed. During the Civil War, the first of many commercial shipyards was established. Over the years, they have produced many luxury and racing yachts, including several America’s Cup winners.
Today, this quiet community of 4,500 is home to four yacht clubs, several marinas, many reasonably-priced seafood restaurants and – for you history buffs – the City Island Historical Society and Nautical Museum. City Island has been featured in a surprising number of movies including Butterfield 8 , Long Day’s Journey into Night, Awakenings, A Bronx Tale, Summer of Sam, The Royal Tenenbaums and of course, City Island.
